Telling Time to the Hour!

4/21/2017

Hello parents and families and Happy Friday!!

This week our major theme is TIME! We introduced what a clock is, that it tells us the time, the difference between the minute and the hour hands, and practiced telling the time to the nearest hour. When the minute hand is on the twelve, it is always an o'clock (:00). Next week we will be continuing our time unit and introducing time to the half our (:30). We made our own clocks out of paper plates and we will continue to use those in school to practice; then we will send them home for you to practice at home with them!

Over the last few weeks, we have been working hard on our NWEA test preparation! Our testing is coming up very soon (second week of May)! Please check with your teachers for exact dates and times. To prepare, we have been working on editing sentences, building sentences, and addition and subtraction combined. Next week, we will introduce and begin to practice addition and subtraction story problems.

In reading this month, we have been working on introducing different types of poetry! We learned and practiced reading and writing haiku poems, introduced sonnets, and will introduce limericks next week. In reading groups, we are working hard on blending sounds, sight word knowledge, fluency and comprehension. In science, we finished up our month long unit on Force and Motion. We learned about the two types of force (push and pull), and the definition of force, motion, position, and gravity. In social studies, we also completed our "Where Am I" unit in which we learned about the difference between maps and globes, that maps represent places, and about our country and planet. We will increase upon this knowledge in weeks to come.

In writing, we introduced the difference between a fact and an opinion and have focused our writing on opinion writing. We are using graphic organizers to organize our writing. We are stating out opinions and then explaining WHY we have that opinion. We are working on adding details and having at least 2-3 sentences in our writing. We of course are still working on capitalization, punctuation, spelling, spaces, and sight words!

Next week, in addition to working on time to the half hour, we will be introducing clouds and fractions!

Homework
Word Family homework - The word family for the week is the -ap family. Please make sure the homework page is completed by your child and returned on Monday! Also, remember that the letters you use MUST make real words; not nonsense words so please reread the words with your child to make sure they make sense!

Reading Logs - Make sure you are working on reading logs nightly and filling them in! April reading logs are due on May 1st. Please remember these ARE also a grade on your child's report card so it is VERY important that they get turned in on time! Also, remember that your child gets to sign our 100/200/300 train if they reach a new milestone of books!

Field Trip:
Just as a heads up, our next field trip is to the Detroit Zoo on Friday, June 2nd! Stay tuned for more details! We will all be riding the bus together!

Amphibians and St Patrick's Day!!!

3/17/2017

Hello parents and families and Happy Friday!!

This week we learned about our fifth and final class of animals; the amphibians! We learned that amphibians live part of their lives in water and part on land, they usually hove soft, moist skin, they are cold-blooded, they breathe through their skin, and they live in moist areas. The main types of amphibians are salamanders, newts, frogs and toads. The main focus of our week was the life cycle of a frog. We learned that frogs start off as eggs, grown into tadpole, then into froglets with a tail, and then lose the tail and become frogs! We completed some fun projects including a a frog puppet and our life cycle of a frog circle as well. Now that we have completed our animals unit, we will begin our animal reports next week! By now, all the students should have chosen their animal and turned in the paper with their 4 facts on it! We can't wait to complete our books!

In reading groups this week, we are working at our new reading levels! Each teacher assessed the students and SO MANY of them went up a level or two or more! This does mean that their books are more challenging so each group is working on the particular skills they need to master. Some are working on patterning text, some on sight word recognition, some on word family identification, some on reading comprehension, and some on fluency. All of these skills are integral to your child's success with reading! Remember to still be reading with your child on RazKids every single night so you can see how much they are improving, as well as identify areas they might need some extra help in too!

In math, we have continued to review and practice subtraction. The kids are getting stronger and stronger at this every day! Don't forget to be practicing this at home too! Next week, we will begin putting addition and subtraction problems together. The need to be able to pay attention to the sign, identify whether it wants them to add or subtract, and then complete the problem correctly. This is what will prepare them not only for our NWEA Math test in May, but also next school year. We continued to introduce Montessori math lessons during worktime, based on what each student is ready for. These include the hundred board and writing numbers to 100, making complex numbers, the ten board, missing number, more than/less than, and the teen board.

In writing, we finished up our "All About Me" books in addition to completing our Frog acrostic poem, our March "I Feel Lucky" writing and our "If I Were A Leprechaun" writing. Next week, as mentioned above, we will begin working individually with the students to complete their final draft of their Animal Chapter Books. We will be working on these for a few weeks, writing and illustrating them as well as binding them. We will be transforming into authors and illustrators and the kids are so excited! We will still be writing daily in our free writing journal to work on sounding out words, capitalization, spacing, punctuation, and multiple sentence writing.

On Friday, we celebrated St. Patrick's Day with some Lucky Charm graphing, making a four leaf clover out of paint chips, and our rainbow pot of gold! We hope that you all have a very fun and safe holiday!

Next week, our theme is rainbows! We will be learning about the colors of the rainbow, completing some fun projects, and talking about the science behind how a rainbow happens! Monday is the First Day of Spring (YAY!!!) so we will also be completing a fun project to bring in the excitement of our new season! Don't forget that next Friday (the 24th) is a 1/2 Day of School so dismissal begins at noon and Parent Conferences are that afternoon!

Homework

Please remember these ARE also a grade on your child's report card so it is VERY important that they get turned in on time! Also, remember that your child gets to sign our 100/200/300 train if they reach a new milestone of books!

BOOK FAIR:
Yay! The book fair is here! One of the most exciting weeks of our year! Next Monday, the students will be previewing the Book Fair and completing their wish lists. We will send them home (just like in December) and your teacher will provide your class' "shopping" date and time. Make sure to send in the money (with tax included) for the books that you are allowing your child to purchase. It will also be open during our parent teacher conferences on Friday! There are some really awesome books; including some really great new books so make sure to check them out and take advantage of the great deals! They make great Easter basket gifts too!

This week we learned about our third class of animals...Birds. We learned about the parts of a bird and made our very own bird feeders. We got lucky with some nice weather this week so we also spent some extra time outside to play and check out some birds in their natural habitat.

Next week we will be learning about Dr. Seuss and reading some of his famous books. We will read one Dr. Seuss book a day and make a project or do an assignment related to that book. This is a very fun week!

On Tuesday we spent some time talking more about President's Day. We reviewed what we learned about Abraham Lincoln and then we learned about George Washington. The Kindergarten hallway is decorated with some awesome looking projects of our two Presidents!

We have started writing our own individual "how to" books. Every child starts with a graphic organizer and then uses their graphic organizer to complete their books. The students will be working on these for the rest of the month.

Michigan Science Center Field Trip
Permission slips went home earlier this week. You may pay by cash or through EZ Pay. If you choose the EZ Pay option, please write your payment code on the permission slip you are sending in. All permission slips are due by Monday, March 13th.

Hello parents and families and Happy Friday!!

This week, we began our five week long unit on the five classes of animals! Our first animal class we introduced was FISH! We learned different facts about fish such as how they breathe (gills), how they move (fins and tail), what they eat, and where they live (habitat). At the end of our animal unit, each student will be picking their favorite animal and completing an animal report at home and at school. Make sure they keep that in mind as we go through the next few weeks! We completed a few fun art projects about fish including our rainbow fish (and we wrote what it would say if it could talk!) and our goldfish aquarium! We also estimated how many goldfish crackers were in our jar, and then counted them to see how close we were! Wednesday was our Cowboy Count Day! THANK YOU to you all for making sure your children were present on this day! The kids looked adorable!

In reading groups this week, we continued to work on identifying sounds in CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant words) throughout the text, sight words, and sounding out unfamiliar words. Please make sure the kids are practicing their sight words as much as possible as this is what will help them increase their reading levels! Also make sure you are reading every night on RazKids to become more confident with reading! In math, we continued to work on addition, practicing daily addition. We are just about ready to begin subtraction; we are set to start that on the 21st! Some Montessori math lessons taught this week were the hundred board and the number chart, making complex numbers, the ten board, missing number, more than/less than, and the teen board. In writing, we began working on our "How To" writing. We started off using a graphic organizer to write the steps of how to build a snowman/how to make fruit salad... Next week, we will write them into books. Then, the kids will come up with their own topic and write and illustrate their own How To books! We will be working on that until the end of February! In social studies, our unit was learning about the continents and their location on the globe. We will be completing our continent globe art project within the next few weeks. In Nutrition this week, they were introduced to the dairy group.

Next week, in addition to Valentines Day (Tuesday) and the 100th Day of School (Thursday), our animal class unit is MAMMALS! We will talk about different important facts about mammals and complete a project relating to a very well known mammal. Should be a very exciting week!

Valentines' Day
Don't forget that our Valentine's Day celebration is this coming Tuesday, February 14th!!! We will have a celebration in the morning from 9-11am. We are in need of volunteers for this day. A form has been sent home in your child's folder explaining what will take place on this day. If you have not already turned in your child's Valentine's box and valentines, please do so by Monday at the latest! Make sure that the children ONLY put their own names on the Valentines so it doesn't take a long time to pass them out.

100th Day of School
Don't forget that our 100th Day of School celebration
is this coming Thursday, February 16th!!! We will have a celebration in the morning from 9-11am, completing lots of fun projects! DON'T FORGET that every student needs to wear their 100 day shirt (with 100 items glued securely onto it) and also needs to bring in their Ziploc bag of 100 pieces of snack that was assigned to you. We will be putting them altogether for snack in the afternoon! We are also still in need of volunteers for this day! Please let us know if you are available!

 Hello Parents!

This week we have been talking about arctic animals. It seemed to correlate well with our winter weather. The students have learned about why animals need camouflage, why some animals hibernate, and how the blubber helps them survive these cold temperatures. We completed the lesson by making a penguin! For the next few weeks we will be continuing with different animal units. At the end of this unit the students will create an animal book. They will write and illustrate their own story about an animal of their choosing.

For Black History Month we will be writing about famous African Americans and their accomplishments.

NWEA testing is complete. We will be filling out their student goal sheets this week and sending them home. Your teacher will send a message when these go out. Please remember to work on Raz-Kids at night throughout the week so your student can get more computer practice.

COUNT DAY is this Wednesday. Please do not forget to dress up like a cowboy. It is important that ALL students are present this day. Our federal funding is based upon our enrollment and attendance this day.

Next week will be Valentines Day (Tuesday) & 100's day (Thursday). Please send in the items for Valentines day when you can. More information will be coming out for 100's day.

Hello parents and families and Happy Friday!!

This week, our theme was mittens! We completed a few really cute mitten projects, such as hand print mittens and stained glass window mittens. One of these is hanging in the halls; the other is hanging on the windows! Be sure to check them out as you drive by at dismissal! The mitten homework project that the kids turned in look adorable hanging outside in the hall on our clothesline! We read Jan Brett's The Mitten and complete a story recall project together. They will be bring these home so make sure to have the kids RETELL the story to you! We have been working on retelling a story; which is a VERY important Kindergarten skill they need to know how to do. We also used mittens to introduce skip counting by 2's! We will be practicing this a lot in the upcoming weeks!

In reading groups this week, we continued to work on concepts of print but also began working on identifying sounds in CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant words) throughout the text, sight words, and sounding out unfamiliar words. Please make sure the kids are practicing their sight words as much as possible as this is what will help them increase their reading levels! Also make sure you are reading every night on RazKids to become more confident with reading!

In math, we continued to work on addition, practicing daily addition as well as teaching different ways to add, whether it be dots, counting on, objects, fingers, our bead bracelets, or in our heads. They even practiced addition in gym! Some Montessori math lesson taught this week were the hundred board, making complex numbers, the ten board, missing number, more than/less than, and the intro tray. In writing, we continue to work in writing groups and have been working on our individual goals; whether it be capitalization, punctuation, spacing, sounding out words, sight words, or writing multiple sentences. In social studies, our new unit is Goods and Services. We discussed that a good is something that you buy or get for free and a service is something that someone does for us and completed a picture sort together! We will be working on this for the next two weeks! In science, our unit was sink vs. float. We completed an experiment together in which we guessed whether each object would sink or float and then completed it to see if we were right! This would be something fun to do at home too! :) In Nutrition this week, we watched a video on how important fruits and vegetables are for us!

Next week,

Marquis Theatre Field Trip
We had so much fun at the Marquis Theatre. The Snow Queen was a very cute play that the children seemed to enjoy. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered this week. We really appreciate you. These field trips would not be possible without your help.

Cowboy Count Day
Count Day is Wednesday, February 8th. It is very important your child is at school on time and remains here all day. We are going to have a cowboy theme to celebrate. Your child should come to school dressed in their best cowboy clothes. We will make our cowboy hats that day in school to complete our cowboy look.

Valentines' Day
Valentine's Day is February 14th!!! We will have a celebration in the morning from 9-11am. We are in need of volunteers for this day. A form has been sent home in your child's folder explaining what will take place on this day. Hello Families!

This has been quite a short week! On Monday, we had school off for Martin Luther King Jr. day then we had an unexpected snow/ice day on Tuesday morning. Thank you all for being so patient and understanding with the last minute call off. Many did not know how bad the roads were until we all started leaving for school. We are thankful all of our AMA family was safe that day.

This week we have worked on addition and measurement. We are just beginning with addition so we are teaching all of the students different strategies they can use to solve problems. This is going to be an ongoing subject that we practice all month. Please work on the addition homework packet each night at home so your child gets as much practice as possible. For Martin Luther King day we tried to explain what life was like during those times. The students worked on a scholastic that explained how everyone should be treated fairly and not discriminated against based upon their skin color. Measurement standards in Kindergarten works on measuring things with non standard tools. We have measured how many snowflakes tall we are, used a unit measurer on a paper, and measured feet length with plastic chain links.

Reminder that our field trip is on Wednesday, January 25th. We need all chaperones to arrive at the school by 8:45 am so we can go over things before we load the buses. The students do not need a car seat since we will be riding the buses. They also do not need a special lunch. We will be eating lunch when we get back to school around noon.

Week 13

Hello parents and families and Happy Friday!!

We had a wonderful first week back to school! It was definitely an exhausting week but we also learned so much and had lots of fun! The theme this week was winter! We completed a few cute winter projects; including our glitter snowflake winter wonderland outside of our classrooms in the back hall! It looks so sparkly and beautiful back there! We also completed our Aerial snowman project and practiced estimation completing our cotton ball snowman. We will continue more cute winter projects throughout the month so be on the lookout! We also completed our family tree presentations; these turned out great!!!! :)

Work time this week consisted of a lot of review of rules, procedures, expectations, goals, etc. We also taught a lot of new math and language lessons including the ten board, the hundred board, base ten, intro tray (intro to decimal system), missing number, more than/less than, word to picture, beg/middle/end sounds, and blends and digraphs.  In reading groups this week, we reviewed concepts of print and began discussing the importance of reading for purpose and fluency.  The kids have been making such amazing progress with their reading; keep up the great work! Please make sure the kids are practicing their sight words as much as possible as this is what will help them increase their reading levels! Also make sure you are reading every night on RazKids to become more confident with reading!

In math, our big unit that we began this week is ADDITION! This will be a major unit focus for the next 6-8 weeks. We will be teaching them multiple strategies, will be completing daily addition practice, and will be sending home some additional homework practice as well.  In writing, we have dived into writing groups and have assigned different goals to each child, based on what they need to specifically work on; whether it be capitalization, punctuation, spacing, sounding out words, sight words, or writing multiple sentences. In social studies, our new unit is Needs and Wants. We talked about what we need to survive and the difference between things we need in life and things that we just really want. In science, we learned about the difference between magnetic and non-magnetic items and the science behind magnets. They had a lot of fun playing with them too!

Something new we began this week was our 6 week nutrition and wellness class that will be taught on Wednesdays! We have someone coming in every Wednesday (Ms. Jenny's sister actually!) and teaching us important health and wellness lessons. This week was the importance of washing our hands! They got to use a black light to see just how many germs are on their hands! EEWW! It was gross but educational!

We also had our new assembly this week, introducing our January character trait, CARING. We talked about what it means to be caring and pointed out many examples of this and what we will be looking for. At the end of this month, each teacher will choose a student that exemplifies the definition of caring and they we be awarded at the beginning of next month! Congratulations to our December award winners!

Next week, our unit will be measurement; as well as a deeper focus on addition. In Kindergarten, we teach them about non-standard measurement such as measuring with cubes, beads, blocks, paperclips, etc.

Homework
Sight word homework
- please make sure to be completing this each week and turning it in on Mondays! This is a grade on your child's report card!!
Reading Logs - Don't forget to be working on these every night and filling them in! If you haven't turned in your December reading log; please do so! Please remember these ARE also a grade on your child's report card so it is VERY important that they get turned in on time! Also, remember that your child gets to sign our 100/200/300 train if they reach a new milestone of books!

NWEA
Please see the AMA website and individual teacher website pages for dates of your classrooms reading and math Winter NWEA testing. Next week, we will be individually going over each student's goals for the test and what they need to remember to do to help them be most successful!

Winter Clothing
Please remember that we DO go outside if the temperature (with the wind chill is 25 degrees or higher). If the kids do not have boots, coats, hats, gloves and snow pants, they are not allowed to go in the snow. The absolutely minimum they must have is a coat, hat, and gloves. In addition, if you send your child to school in boots, they MUST have a pair of shoes to change into. Please check individual classroom pages for GYM schedules as well, to make sure they are prepared with tennis shoes for gym. Another important note - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING you send to school! We are getting A LOT of items lost with NO NAMES! Thank you in advance for your help with this! :)

Week 12

We have had a great week in Kindergarten. We hope you all enjoyed your snow day on Monday. Just a reminder that the students will go outside if the "feels like" temp is 21 degrees or higher. Please make sure that they have the correct outdoor clothing, hats, gloves, and a winter coat. If they want to play on the playground they need to have snowpants and boots. The students should also know how to zip their own coats. We try to get them outside as quick as possible so they can run off some energy,

Our theme this week was all about gingerbread. We have been working on sequencing, identifying number words, beginning sounds, and counting focusing on more/less.  We have read many different versions of the gingerbread man to compare and contrast them. To finish our week, we decorated gingerbread cookies, who ran away!! The students enjoyed the special treat!

Next week, we will be learning about the Holidays around the World. If you signed up to volunteer, your teacher will send an email to remind you. If you signed up to donate any items please make sure these are in by Monday morning.
Friday the 23rd is a half day, but it is VERY important your child is here. Students may come dressed in pajamas, we are going to take a trip on the Polar Express.

REMINDER: Play field trip money and permission slip  is due by MONDAY!
