Hello parents and families and Happy Friday!!
We had a wonderful first week back to school! It was definitely an exhausting week but we also learned so much and had lots of fun! The theme this week was winter! We completed a few cute winter projects; including our glitter snowflake winter wonderland outside of our classrooms in the back hall! It looks so sparkly and beautiful back there! We also completed our Aerial snowman project and practiced estimation completing our cotton ball snowman. We will continue more cute winter projects throughout the month so be on the lookout! We also completed our family tree presentations; these turned out great!!!! :)
Work time this week consisted of a lot of review of rules, procedures, expectations, goals, etc. We also taught a lot of new math and language lessons including the ten board, the hundred board, base ten, intro tray (intro to decimal system), missing number, more than/less than, word to picture, beg/middle/end sounds, and blends and digraphs. In reading groups this week, we reviewed concepts of print and began discussing the importance of reading for purpose and fluency. The kids have been making such amazing progress with their reading; keep up the great work! Please make sure the kids are practicing their sight words as much as possible as this is what will help them increase their reading levels! Also make sure you are reading every night on RazKids to become more confident with reading!
In math, our big unit that we began this week is ADDITION! This will be a major unit focus for the next 6-8 weeks. We will be teaching them multiple strategies, will be completing daily addition practice, and will be sending home some additional homework practice as well. In writing, we have dived into writing groups and have assigned different goals to each child, based on what they need to specifically work on; whether it be capitalization, punctuation, spacing, sounding out words, sight words, or writing multiple sentences. In social studies, our new unit is Needs and Wants. We talked about what we need to survive and the difference between things we need in life and things that we just really want. In science, we learned about the difference between magnetic and non-magnetic items and the science behind magnets. They had a lot of fun playing with them too!
Something new we began this week was our 6 week nutrition and wellness class that will be taught on Wednesdays! We have someone coming in every Wednesday (Ms. Jenny's sister actually!) and teaching us important health and wellness lessons. This week was the importance of washing our hands! They got to use a black light to see just how many germs are on their hands! EEWW! It was gross but educational!
We also had our new assembly this week, introducing our January character trait, CARING. We talked about what it means to be caring and pointed out many examples of this and what we will be looking for. At the end of this month, each teacher will choose a student that exemplifies the definition of caring and they we be awarded at the beginning of next month! Congratulations to our December award winners!
Next week, our unit will be measurement; as well as a deeper focus on addition. In Kindergarten, we teach them about non-standard measurement such as measuring with cubes, beads, blocks, paperclips, etc.

Homework
Sight word homework - please make sure to be completing this each week and turning it in on Mondays! This is a grade on your child's report card!!
Reading Logs - Don't forget to be working on these every night and filling them in! If you haven't turned in your December reading log; please do so! Please remember these ARE also a grade on your child's report card so it is VERY important that they get turned in on time! Also, remember that your child gets to sign our 100/200/300 train if they reach a new milestone of books!
NWEA
Please see the AMA website and individual teacher website pages for dates of your classrooms reading and math Winter NWEA testing. Next week, we will be individually going over each student's goals for the test and what they need to remember to do to help them be most successful!
Winter Clothing
Please remember that we DO go outside if the temperature (with the wind chill is 25 degrees or higher). If the kids do not have boots, coats, hats, gloves and snow pants, they are not allowed to go in the snow. The absolutely minimum they must have is a coat, hat, and gloves. In addition, if you send your child to school in boots, they MUST have a pair of shoes to change into. Please check individual classroom pages for GYM schedules as well, to make sure they are prepared with tennis shoes for gym. Another important note - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING you send to school! We are getting A LOT of items lost with NO NAMES! Thank you in advance for your help with this! :)
