Hello parents and families and Happy Friday!!
This week we learned about our fifth and final class of animals; the amphibians! We learned that amphibians live part of their lives in water and part on land, they usually hove soft, moist skin, they are cold-blooded, they breathe through their skin, and they live in moist areas. The main types of amphibians are salamanders, newts, frogs and toads. The main focus of our week was the life cycle of a frog. We learned that frogs start off as eggs, grown into tadpole, then into froglets with a tail, and then lose the tail and become frogs! We completed some fun projects including a a frog puppet and our life cycle of a frog circle as well. Now that we have completed our animals unit, we will begin our animal reports next week! By now, all the students should have chosen their animal and turned in the paper with their 4 facts on it! We can't wait to complete our books!
In reading groups this week, we are working at our new reading levels! Each teacher assessed the students and SO MANY of them went up a level or two or more! This does mean that their books are more challenging so each group is working on the particular skills they need to master. Some are working on patterning text, some on sight word recognition, some on word family identification, some on reading comprehension, and some on fluency. All of these skills are integral to your child's success with reading! Remember to still be reading with your child on RazKids every single night so you can see how much they are improving, as well as identify areas they might need some extra help in too!
In math, we have continued to review and practice subtraction. The kids are getting stronger and stronger at this every day! Don't forget to be practicing this at home too! Next week, we will begin putting addition and subtraction problems together. The need to be able to pay attention to the sign, identify whether it wants them to add or subtract, and then complete the problem correctly. This is what will prepare them not only for our NWEA Math test in May, but also next school year. We continued to introduce Montessori math lessons during worktime, based on what each student is ready for. These include the hundred board and writing numbers to 100, making complex numbers, the ten board, missing number, more than/less than, and the teen board.
In writing, we finished up our "All About Me" books in addition to completing our Frog acrostic poem, our March "I Feel Lucky" writing and our "If I Were A Leprechaun" writing. Next week, as mentioned above, we will begin working individually with the students to complete their final draft of their Animal Chapter Books. We will be working on these for a few weeks, writing and illustrating them as well as binding them. We will be transforming into authors and illustrators and the kids are so excited! We will still be writing daily in our free writing journal to work on sounding out words, capitalization, spacing, punctuation, and multiple sentence writing.
On Friday, we celebrated St. Patrick's Day with some Lucky Charm graphing, making a four leaf clover out of paint chips, and our rainbow pot of gold! We hope that you all have a very fun and safe holiday!
Next week, our theme is rainbows! We will be learning about the colors of the rainbow, completing some fun projects, and talking about the science behind how a rainbow happens! Monday is the First Day of Spring (YAY!!!) so we will also be completing a fun project to bring in the excitement of our new season! Don't forget that next Friday (the 24th) is a 1/2 Day of School so dismissal begins at noon and Parent Conferences are that afternoon!

In addition, if you send your child to school in boots, they MUST have a pair of shoes to change into. Please check individual classroom pages for GYM schedules as well, to make sure they are prepared with tennis shoes for gym. Another important note - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING you send to school! We are getting A LOT of items lost with NO NAMES! Thank you in advance for your help with this! :)
